The Baynesfield Estate Museum

house2

It was only in 1996 that the architect and the age of the house was established from a newspaper cutting from the Natal Mercury of 1882. An architect A H Halder advertised for builders to tender on the building of a residence for the Hon. Joseph Baynes of Nel's Rust.

The house is built out of Pietermaritzburg red brick with a flight of 20 steps leading to the front verandah.

The Camelia bushes on either side of these steps were palnted by Sarah and Joseph and still flower prolifically.

As was often the case, the house was built facing south, making the south west verandah cold enough to house meat safe before the days of refrigirators.

Some of the furniture in the lounge is original with other pieces being loaned to Baynesfield by the KZN Museum Service.
